As much as I love beaches, palm trees and sand between my toes. Sometimes I just crave a little wilderness excursion in the crisp winter air. I needed a break away from the hustle and bustle of Joburg and Thompsons Holidays helped me sort out a fuss free winter weekend getaway.
Misty Hills is about half an hour away from Johannesburg but you feel like you are so much further.
Accommodation at Misty Hills is nothing short of luxury comfort and elegance. With 195 stone-built thatched rooms and suites furnished to complement the indigenous surroundings and lavishly decorated with brightly coloured African fabrics, artworks and handmade furniture. The Royal and Presidential suites each have enclosed walled-in gardens and plunge pools, offering the discerning guest total privacy, luxury and exclusivity.
Friday
On my arrival on Friday I was helped by the friendly staff at Misty Hills, who helped me check into my room. I put my bags in my room and kicked off my weekend with a Spa treatment at Misty hills. Now anyone who knows me knows how much I love Spa treatments, I have been to the best spas in Johannesburg and although this was my first time here, it is right up there with the best. This exceptional Spa experience is made even more memorable with the choice of treatment rooms set in a lush indigenous setting with cascading water features to sooth the senses. Post the spa treatment you can relax in the beautiful garden, or take a swim in the private pool or simply relax on the sunbeams.
You also have the option to book a Signature Room, which will allow you to enjoy your Spa treatments in privacy and comfort – whether alone or with a partner. Incorporating European opulence within an African environment, the Signature Room features a private jet bath and plunge pool.
Post my Spa treatment I went to relax in my beautiful room and got ready for dinner. I was hosted at the award-winning, internationally renowned Carnivore restaurant,Carnivore recently celebrated its 20 year anniversary and continues to provide Africa’s Greatest Eating Experience.
Here’s what you can expect...The feast begins with delicious homemade soup and honey bread. While you sip on a ‘Dawa’ (the traditional house cocktail of vodka, honey and lime) - I opted for a sweet rosè for the night.
A Lazy Susan with a small flag on top, is placed in the centre of your table, bearing six different fresh salads and various sauces to compliment your meal. Waiters circulate wielding Masaai spears with at least 15 types of game and domestic meats, ranging from beef, chicken, boerewors and lamb to ostrich, kudu and crocodile, to name just a few all charcoal-grilled and expertly carved directly onto your hot cast-iron plate. Traditional ‘pap’, chakalaka sauce, and a baked potato accompany this ‘Beast of a Feast’. You can pretty much eat as much as you want, but it's a aloooooot of food! Once you've have had enough you ‘surrender’ by lowering the flag on your Lazy Susan! Through the course of the night the staff pulled out their drums and broke into song, it was a truly South African experience I can't wait to go back!A selection of delicious desserts, accompanied by tea or coffee, rounds off the meal.
Saturday
After an amazing nights rest in my suite, I woke up and took a walk around and every twist and turn was so scenic the views are something that will be etched into my memory forever. I then went to the summer house for a full continental breakfast they serve a really good cappucino, and the food was delicious.
I spent the rest of my day relaxing by the pool with a drink from the Gin Box. I love the poolside at Misty Hills, it made me feel like I was at tropical island resort. These are the kind of weekends dreams are made of.
Sunday
I spent my Sunday relaxing at the pool and decided to do one last treatment at the spa, this weekend was by far the most relaxing weekend breaks I've had ever.
I love that this hotel is filled with the most beautiful art works and sculptures you can spend the day going through the various art works situated all around the establishment. you really don't need to step out of this hotel throughout your whole stay and that's the beauty of this place.I can't wait to sneak off for a few days into the picturesque of another beautiful part of this country.
